Attorney Profile
A Louisville lawyer with courtroom experience from multiple sides of the legal system: judge, prosecutor, defense attorney, special public defender, author and legal instructor.
My Unique Perspective
Experience From Every Angle
The earlier version of this site described Benham Sims as a former judge, Special Justice on the Kentucky Supreme Court, trial prosecutor, defense attorney, author, special prosecutor and special public defender. That background matters because a criminal case is shaped by evidence, procedure, credibility, timing, negotiation and courtroom judgment.
When a person faces a criminal charge, the question is not only what statute applies. The deeper questions include what the prosecutor can prove, whether police followed the rules, how a judge may view the evidence, and what outcome protects the client’s future.

A direct, case-focused approach
People facing criminal charges often feel embarrassed, frightened or uncertain. Injury victims may feel overwhelmed by medical bills, lost work and insurance questions. A good first consultation should be practical: what happened, what paperwork exists, what court date is scheduled, what evidence may matter, and what immediate risks need attention.
